How To Make an Old Porsche Fly

FROM MY REVIEWS IN THE 356 REGISTRY:

First, Craig Richter's "How to Make an Old Porsche Fly" is a 200 page soft bound

manual on advanced modifications to 616 engines for reliability and power. The book starts with the explanation that for years Volkswagen engines were hopped up, because they were cheap and just about anything done to them resulted in big improvements- which certainly wasn't true of Porsche engines. But now sophisticated VW parts are more expensive than Porsche parts. But how can 20 year old Porsche parts, even if they cost less, compare with current VW parts having 20 years of development - especially when Porsche engines are limited to 1800CC and VW to 2200CC and more? Craig warms the cockles of my heart (a 693 part) by recommending a basic library. Of course, included is the 356 Registry!  I find the book to be moderately esoteric - but the first major section deals with the bottom end and its need for a full flow oil filter. Covered are various methods of plumbing the beast (why isn't there available a combination oil pump/oil filter?). The book is required reading for anyone who has mastered Pellow and should be held in hand while discussing the building of a trick engine with one's wrench twister. The foregoing makes it sound as if the book is mainly useful for building race engines, and it may be, but its main goal is to help you acquire a more powerful and longer lived engine.
