From my reviews in the 356 Registry

Two exiting new books have become available this month.  The first is more straightforward; Brian Long’s Book of Porsche 356.  This has been an amazingly well received book, not in the least due to having a large number of photographs recently released from the factory Arkivs.  The factory seems to release photographs in boluses.  The pretty if somewhat zaftig redhead standing by the auratium green 356A cabriolet in the Nov-Dec issue of the Registry is also seen standing next to the cabriolet with its top down – made peculiar by the luggage being dumped in the cabriolet’s front seat -- clearly not a factory advertising photograph, but also clearly from the archives.  A well known photograph has a lovely brunette, Evi Butz I think, standing next to a blue cabriolet in front of Schloss Solitude -- but, what a bizarre blue.  Evi’s coloring looks a little strange as well.  All becomes clear when other books are examined, in this case Jugen Lewendowski’s Porsche Typen and Geschichte, where the color appears to be Sky blue – Evi looks better as well.  Color reproduction is less than perfect.  English books have always been relatively expensive, and with the free fall of the dollar (low core rate of inflation not withstanding) Book of Porsche 356 is expensive at $69.95.  While nowhere near as bad a Meredith’s efforts, Long’s writings are not error free.  In the space of 10 pages he mentions Rudge wheels as not being available in Germany and then shows a car with the German retaining Hex nuts instead of the knock-offs.  If you are looking for the definitive 356 history book – this is not it.  That book, Conrad’s Porsche 356 Driving in its Purest Form is already available and at only $49.95 list.  If you own the Conrad and want to buy another history book, distinguished by marvelous photographs, especially from the Pre-A period, you will receive nothing but encouragement from me.

FROM MY REVIEWS IN THE 356 REGISTRY:

Hot On the heels of his very successful Book of Porsche 356, Brian Long has brought out the even more expensive Porsche Racing Cars 1953 to 1975.  This title should sound familiar – it’s almost identical to Anthony Prichard’s Porsche -- The Sports Racing Cars 1953 to 1975 – indeed the books are necessarily extremely similar. Both give similar, reasonably accurate racing histories – Long has useful charts of Porsche sports racing places by race.  Both rely heavily, almost to exclusion of any other sources, on Porsche Arkivs.  At least Long doe not misidentify the Dreikantschaber, although he refers to it as the DKS.

Long comments on the “Stunning publicity shot of the Siffert/Redman 908/2L – the Flunder body with a longer tail – and the 917 of Elford…” parked in front of a two engine Cessna, without realizing this was Ferry and Louise’s private corporate aircraft – identifiable in Smalley’s Porsche 911 Scrap Book by its call letters of D-FLP (Deutschland Ferdinand Louise Porsche/Piech

Long’s Porsche Racing Cars 1953 to 1975 at $89.95 has 272 pages, 148 up to 1966, while Prichard’s Porsche -- The Sports Racing Cars 1953 to 1975 has 336 page, 116 up to 1966 at $69.95.  Given there is little to choose between the two books, buy Prichard’s first.
