From my reviews in the 356 REGISTRY:

A Little off the subject is Peter Zimmermann’s USED 911 STORY, which has been extensively updated and rewritten – though in part Peter still uses the Frere/Elfrink approach of sticking sentences on the end of extant paragraphs, resulting in firm declarations which are contradicted immediately following.  In describing the 198 turbo we are told it “has the largest brake pads ever used in a street Porsche” or the 911SC is certainly the best of the 911s to date”  In the preface Zimmermann lists and explains the five cardinal priorities: chassis, body, interior, drive train – yes it comes after the interior.  You could do worse than to adopt absolutely and completely the guide in the preface, were you interested in buying a 356.  Coupled with Jim Schrager’s BUYING, DRIVNG & ENJOYING THE 356, even an amateur could hope to rationally approach buying a 356.  After an explanation of the multiple succeeding numbering systems – fortunately no the 356 is no where near as complex and is well covered in Jim’s book – Peter examines the 911 model year by model year.  Fortunately, again, the 356 is old enough that most surviving cars have had whatever congenital weakness they had fixed – with the notable exception of my ’59 normal, which has started burning oil at an unacceptable and accelerating rate. Vic Skirmants says that they do that at about 60,000 miles.  The first chapter on cars 1965-1966 starts with the admonition:  “Buying an older Porsche can be tricky.  Keep in mind some key issues to make your potential purchase a satisfying one.”  True for early 911s and true for 356s.  Not completely appropriate to the 356, but a necessary book if you are buying a 911 and the principles do transfer.  A reasonable deal at $22.95 and it is now published by our editor’s RPM books.
